Oprah Helps us Say Goodbye to Mary Tyler Moore

Mary Tyler Moore, who charted a new course for women on TV and in the workplace on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, died this afternoon at 80. She was a hero to millions of ambitious women, but she inspired a certain extra level of fandom in Oprah.
"I wanted to be Mary Tyler Moore," Winfrey has said. And in a 1997 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Winfrey asserted that when she was "just starting out in TV, I was inspired by one woman whose show I never missed, I mean never. I tuned in every week just to see her turn the world on with her smile."
Winfrey enthused for several more minutes and declared her admiration once more: "Mary Tyler Moore—one of the greatest ever. I love her."
Which is exactly when Mary Tyler Moore peeked out from behind a literal curtain and Winfrey immediately burst into tears. Watch the moment here and remember just how many brilliant women believed they could be what they wanted to be because of Mary Tyler Moore. The perfection starts at 2:35:
